THE E-MAIL CLUB

Modems are in vogue today. And so is e-mailing (now, obviously!!). Whether it is to your cousin or relative studying abroad or for general information, e-mail is the fastest and cheapest mode of communication. "Excuse me, but did you say cheapest??".Of course. All your expense is your phone bill ( Rs. 2.00 max at max. efficiency). "Yes. But that is besides the cost of my comp. and my modem. So, guys without comps are still stranded". Stranded? In communications? In the 21st century? There must be a solution. As a matter of fact, there is one - the VSNL ( who else?) e-mail club. To send mail: The user must go to the vsnl office and type in and send his mesage through and pay (Rs.10/- + 60 ps. for every line) there itself.

To receive mail: The person who is sending mail to user has to write his name and telephone number on top of message. When a mail is received vsnl will contact user and user has to come personally and receive his message.(there is also some courier service which delivers your message to your specified address but the user has to pay extra for that and the extra is pretty steep). So all folks without a comp or a modem but with lotsa e-mail friends now you know where to go. Happy mailing .......

Sensenet

A fabulous boon for all shell users – SHELLSOCK is now history. It was great while it lasted, until VSNL decided to put the brakes on it. It is now back in a new ‘avtaar’ but users will swear by the fact that it is not even half as good as the original version. Well, good things seldom last forever. So, back to the same old students connection, right! Wrong! At www.sensenet.com, you can now avail of a TCP/IP connection, the actual thing. And to top it all, it claims to be better than shellsock. Much better. So there must be a catch. Good guess, it’s not for free! But they do have a provision for a seven day trial version and you may then register if you like the demo (Rs.2000/- bucks lifetime). So, enjoy it while it lasts!!

ICQ – paging services.

When Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, he would never have suspected the growth of an industry out of it! From that instrument to cordless to cell-phones to pagers is a big leap! Since I mentioned pagers, let me also mention, you can now send a message to someone on the net online. ICQ pager and Yahoo pager are two sites on the net that provide you with this facility. You can download their software at www.icq.com and www.yahoo.com. Once you are online you can send a message to any one of your friends (the server indicates if they are online) and even chat. Unfortunately though this requires a TCP/IP account. Now there is also paging through the net. At www.messageindia.com you can send a message to a pager and the message is through in 5 or 15 minutes time. This facility, called E-page, introduced in Mumbai and Bangalore will sure prove to be a boon to users!!
